I'm single, no kids, no car, $1700 is how much I need per month all bills, and extras accounted for.

In most cases yes. If you live in NYC you will have alot tougher of a time then say in , Boise Idaho.

35k will always be enough to get by on. You will just have to limit the luxuries in your life.

You can live on any money. I used to live on less than that. The secret is to live within your means. But yes, you can live on 35K per year. Just make sure you only buy what you have money for, and try to put some money aside every month, perhaps $100. You will survive. Do not lease cars, only buy them, and if you can't afford the car you like, just downgrade and buy the one you can, do not lease. Basically do not listen to salespeople, who will offer to finance purchases you can't afford otherwise. If you come to a store and want a big screen TV set, do not finance it even if it is free financing. Say if they offer 12 months free financing, just ask how much the payment will be, make an envelope and start putting that much every month for 12 months. When done saving come back and get yourself the TV set. It will probably be better and cheaper. Do like that with everything and you will be fine. I know people who make 4 times as much as you and struggle financially every month.

Many people live on a lot less than that. However, I make slightly more than that and live paycheck to paycheck. I guess really it's all on how well you budget your money - not one of my fortes.

Given all that, you should be doing just fine.

I'm also single, no kids...but do have a car payment (and live in an expensive state for car insurance), and paying off debt I accumulated when living with my ex.

I was making it on 20K a year with 2 mortgages and survived just fine and was comfortable. Granted, more money is nice, but you do what you have to do,
