The previous answer was correct in that as a particle speeds up it gains mass, so requires more energy to accelerate it. This continues and the mass approaches infinity as the velocity aproaches light speed, and so it is impossible to reach, or break, the light barrier.

However, if you are already travelling at the speed of light (ie if you are a photon) then you don't have infinite mass (otherwise sunlight would hurt!) and you aren't breaking any laws. Also objects that travel faster than light are possible (tachyons) but it would be impossible for a tachyon to slow down slower than lightspeed.

The speed of light travelling through a vacuum is the universes speed barrier, and that is what I have referred to above, but when light travels through other substances it slows down. This is what causes refraction. Light in a vacuum travels at almost 300 million m/s, in water it is about 30% slower, and in glass it travels at around half its vacuum speed. Substances have been produced that slow light down to walking pace, or even stop it. So, in some circumstances, it is possible to handicap light so much that you can overtake it.

Whenever someone talks about 'c' or 'the speed of light' they are probably refering to the speed of light in a vacuum - 299 792 458 m / s

There are two ways to explain this:

Interpret the equations which were created < 100 years back - all starting with the assumption that velocity of light is the highest limit. Hence, if you interpret you will hit the limit !!!!

Scientific community discovered electomagnetic waves ( from light to radio waves, micro waves, x-ray etc) and fixed the velocity as = vel of light. Electo magenetic waves are the most abundant waves in the earth and the life started evolving with it (Eyes). However, we are still not sure if there are any other mechanism different from Electromagnetic waves and accoustic waves.

Unfortunately, with science growing, the focus has gone on working towards extension of what we know rather than to find what we dont know.

In my opinion, we may well be having particles travelling faster then speed of light

The fact that the speed of light is the speed limit of the universe was derived from Einstein’s Special theory of relativity. As an object approaches the speed of light its mass will increase at a factor of (1- v^2/ c^2) ^1/2. Thus the object will require more energy to accelerate further from the equation E=MC^2. Infinite amount of energy will be required and it is thus impossible to achieve the speed of light

According to relativity a particle with a speed v sees its mass increase according to the formula

m = m(0) (1-v^2/c^2)^0.5

where m is mass at speed v , m(0) speed at rest v=0

c is the speed of light in vacuum

You see if v would be greater than c the terms in bracket could not be calculated, there is no square root of a negative number

tat is because, as a particle approaches the speed of light,it's mass begins to increase. if it reaches the speed of light, it's mass would become infinite ( and to move that would require infinite energy)

When we (or objects) move toward a beam of light with the speed of light we expect the speed of light must be measured as twice its original speed.
When we (or objects) move along with a beam of light with the speed of light we expect the speed of light must be measured as zero.

But experiments and theory have proved that the light’s speed is constant irrespective of our (or objects) speed.

Speed is distance/ time.

Therefore, if the speed of light is to be measured as constant (C = s/t), when we are moving with the speed of light (when moving away or toward a beam of light) both ‘s’ and ‘t’ must be zero. That is we can’t measure the speed of light.

But law of nature will be the same.

Therefore we conclude that we can’t go with the speed of light if light speed is constant and does not depend upon the speed of the motion of objects.

because light has no mass. it is considered to be a electrically charged wave. so it travels so fast . it just transfers it's enomrous heat through the air atoms.

nicely.. the final element approximately Einstein develop into that each little thing is relative. the hardship-unfastened mass potential equation works nicely for enormous bodies shifting lots slower than the cost of sunshine. bodies shifting on the factor of the cost of sunshine want a somewhat greater changed equation to allow for the mass earnings as they flow swifter. do no longer forget approximately, this relativistic mass potential equation relies upon the supposition that no longer something can flow swifter than the cost of sunshine. Einstein made fairly a huge supposition which develop into suitable for him on the time in announcing speed is basically speed with out direction. you notice, mild has no speed while enormous bodies (issues that have mass) can in basic terms have directional speed, that is termed speed. Now for some very pedantic scientists this may well be like announcing a fish is in basic terms a pig with out legs... Is speed basically basically speed with out direction???? As maximum human beings will say, we don't be attentive to.. Neither did Einstein, so he guessed consistent with what he observed and additionally what develop into suitable for him to take him interior the direction he wanted to flow. The technology we've on our planet at present is with the aid of the previous guidelines human beings took. It does not propose to declare that's the final direction or the shortest direction, or the single that is consistent with accepted innovations. that is basically how that is relative to us and the folk that guessed it up. besides.. At our contemporary state of "progression" the pivotal area of this question is wether speed and speed are critically comparable. in the event that they do no longer seem to be then we are form of comparing EM waves with Sound Waves.. in the event that they do no longer seem to be then we are able to in no way gain speeds swifter than mild because of the fact we won't be able to gain speed. although, if it is so and the two are no longer critically close sufficient then this opens up risk for shifting swifter in a particular direction than mild can... in our particularly stepped forward worldwide there remains one accepted regulation which proves all rules.. that's the SUCK IT and notice regulation.... intense-high quality question via the way... This section is open to lots hypothesis and that's considerable for many many minds to think of on those issues.. It provides a stability of view as to the place our technology could be taking us.
