It feels like i have a cell phone thats ringing, sitting on my knee.
I have hurt it a couple of times playing rugby in the past but not for about 2 years.
It's not sore but it is irritating
Any ideas what could be causing this?

Your Patella (kneecap) has sustained damage from the rugby and is now telling you to get help. The ligaments or nerve is trapped or damaged possibly by the knee cap out of line .Some motorcycle racers have this bother .Key hole surgery does the trick every time.good luck.

yes, its likely a nerve issue. I have had two knee surgeries on my right knee caused by sports injuries, and I have this little twitch that feels almost electric when it happens. It is not constant, but its annoying when it happens. My doctor says that a few things might be happening...scar tissue, nerve damage, or muscle spasm around the knee that feels like it is right in the knee. To help this you can try stretching, yoga, icing your knee in twenty min. intervals while just watching tv...if its something more serious, and you think you need to see a doctor, I would make an appointment just to verify that everything is okay with your knee.

you might have a trapped nerve, if it feels shaky and you feel like you cant control it, or it might be a muscle spasm, which is simarlily related as this injury could have caused damage to the tissue and nerves and this takes time to heal. Spasms can be caused by a lack of magnesium in the diet, perhaps take a suppliment, and try and rest it. If your really concerned see your doctor to get it checked.

Have you had an operation on your knee recently? Maybe the surgeon left his mobile phone in there along with his forceps.
Sorry, you probably don't think thats funny!
I had that in my knee last year after a fall, but it went away after a couple of days. Hope yours does too.

maybe your ligaments are loose or overstretched....i know a guy who damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee playing rugby, he had an op on it and now whenever he runs its sounds like if an elastic band was clicking and getting caught on something....strange!

seriously though, go see the doc or a physiotherapist, maybe they have one at your rugby club, or at a local gym, they may be able to tell you what its likely to be, GOOD LUCK with it, hope you find out what it is!

Yes - it's commonly known as VKS - or Vibrating Knee Syndrome.

Sounds like an tendon issue. Does it puff up ?

Try icing it after playing. If it gets bad, call the doc.
