It doesn't leak when the water is turned off. It only leaks (quite a lot) when the middle knob is set so that the water will come out of the shower head.

All this is is a diverter valve and when these wear out the water can get by. Have a look at the fixing for the pull up handle as this needs to be removed to replace the washer. Sometimes these might need a special tool to undo it if there are no apparent flats to get a wrench on. I have replaced the units before when they are too hard to fix.

Rub the leaking section in a well timed fashion with a million/2 of a uncooked Vidalia onion. make useful that the onion is approximately medium sized. enable the onion juice dry for no less than quarter-hour to seal the leak.

replace the rubber or nylon washers inside the turn on handles-can easily be done and parts are available at most hardware stores- it sounds like your parts are worn out

It probably only needs the washer changing.
