The game world would be one where monsters are still the enemy of man but the player characters are trying to settle their own community of outcast monsters, while the human and demi-human races along with the monster races are all against them.

I have run one such campaign already and it lasted for about a year. The story was based on the characters hunting down and obtaining the crowns of 7 orc kings. I am also an experienced enough GM to know not to allow players to be dragons or trolls. The game was alot of fun I asked this question to see if there was enough interest in this type of setting within the gaming community for me to try and run a game for players I have never met before.

I've played some similar games to this, where one or more of the players were monsters, but not exactly like this. It kinda reminds me of Drizzt. There are a lot of opportunities for role-playing, especially if the players are non-evil. There's a lot of room for games revolving around the lack of understanding and prejudice the players would encounter. There is also a lot of room for some really interesting and unique character development. You have to be careful to maintain game balance, as the players could become very powerful or even start out that way, if they were to play a troll or dragon for example. I'd think you'd be better off sticking with humanoid races, they are close enough to the existing rules and abilities for standard races for things to transfer pretty easily. There is a lot of reference material out there for this type of game. I'd recommend the old articles by Elmonster the hobgoblin sage in the old dragon magazines (circa 1992) for ideas on this topic. If the game is well written, refereed and played, it could be excellent! Good luck, it's a lot of work but could be more than worth it.

Edit: I'm sure your players would enjoy a game like that, regardless of who they were. As long as you make interesting adventures, players will want to play.
