I dont want to sound stupied but i was wondering if any one can help me i have downloaded a movie to watch but cant watch it as i have wmp 11 and it keeps saying that this codac thing avi or summit or another doesnt support it. could someone explain to me what this avi or codac thing is and how i get it so i can watch my movie. thank you

Some avi's can be encoded in different formats like DivX and a few others. You need a codec to be able to view it. A codec is pretty much a few files that help the Windows Media player decode it. Codec means CoDecode or something like that.
Anyways, you can surf the internet and find several codecs to download, or do what I do. Download and install an all in one program that contains the most comonly used codecs bundled together. This is called Klite. Either google Klite or go to http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm
The one that says Basic is the one I always grab and it should suit you just fine.

I'm surprised no one has suggested "VLC Media Player"

AVI files have many formats. DivX, Xvid, etc etc. As another answerer mentioned, these codec need to be installed on your computer. I'm not sure if VLC will play those types of files without the codecs installed.
Personally, I don't care much for any of the "Windows Media Players". I now never use them. But WMP may work with your movie file with the proper codecs installed.

best off d/loading Nero with plug-ins(software) It will also burn to DVD so you can watch on TV or on your comp. It will convert automatic.Codecs just type it in your search (whatever you use there's a program with all the codecs you will ever need install and forget about it

Avi is a filetype. You can download realplayer which plays it

download (divx bundle) its free
even if you dont use it it will allow
windows media player to play it.
