I'm considering purchasing a 1970 SS Chevelle, however it has the rectangular speedometer, typical Malibu-not SS, and the owner is telling me that "some" SSls came from the factory like this... the car has all the other SS indicators... 12-bolt, big block, all emblems, interior, steering wheel, floor console, buckets, sway bar, fuel line on wheel well-factory clearance for big block, front disc brakes... I'm told you really cannot identify a true SS by the VIN number.... can anyone confirm this on the dash please?

Sir, Do you have pictures of the dash of that particular car? I do know this much. The 1970 Chevelle SS cars were built in two completely separate factories and there were subtle differences. My fathers 70SS with the 450 hp. 454 had all round gaging, a column shift, buckets no stripes, no cowl induction hood and it had a black vinyl roof. I'd call customer service at Chevrolet and see if there are any publications or descriptions of this car? Service books in library's, Specialty books in large bookstores. I would want further domination before I jumped in at it. What is the asking price on it? Dad's car was carefully restored in Corning NY. Form there it went to Florida. It next went to a man in Georgia. My 85 year old father stopped to see it last April on his way back from Florida. It presently has 32,000 original miles on it. Somehow I wish I could get a good e-mail address for you then I could hook you up with the present owner of dad's car. Great guy to talk to. He's researched volumes of info. I'm sure he'd be the person who could unearth all your questions. The Vin # is valuable. It would tell you where it was built the date and any options that came on the car.

I just looked at a friend of mines 1970 Chevelle SS 396 4spd car 2 days ago. His has the dual round gauges, speedo / tach.

I thought that part of the SS package was the rally gauges. Just 2 cents being tossed in.

Sport dashes were optional reguardless of drivetrain choice. Custom line orders ran the gamut and some mistakes were made. Careful extraction of the factory build sheet(if there) may illuminate you to where and how this car was assembled. If it is gone then the sky's the limit. Exact builds can't be traced without this priceless piece of information reguardless of VIN number. Let your gut decide if there is a lie involved then carefully weigh your options.

I'm pretty sure if the VIN starts with 138 then it is a true Super Sport. If not, then its a clone.
