The classics would be great. But if you're looking for a feisty heroine who lives through trials and tribulations in Louis XIV's France - and meets many of the real people of the times - I adored Sergeanne Golon's "Angelique" series. Here's a web site on it:

I read the books in English and would like to try them in French, too. At least one of the books was made into a film. They may be out of print or difficult to get hold of, but perhaps you can try Amazon or one of the other big suppliers.

Juliette Benzoni is another author I enjoyed for her series about Marianne (taking place in Revolutionary times. She again met many real people), and the Catherine and Arnaud series set in medieval France. I think she also wrote a series about Marie-Antoinette. Details about her are very difficult to find on the net.

Ebay may also be able to help. I hope you manage to find them!

Firstly, do you speak French or can you at least read it? I don't mean to point out the obvious but reading French literature isn't the same if you're reading a translated version of the story.

If you don't have a credit card and therefore can't order online then most major bookstores will have a foreign language section and anything they don't have in stock, you can order.

I live in France so I read quite a lot of French books, although not many romance novels. My personal favorite at the moment is Houllbecq, France's most popular contemporary author but he's a bit of an existential sick puppy and hates women so it might not be your cup of chardonnay. Try Amelie Nothomb, she's not French, she's Belgian, but her books are great, especially for beginners as they're relatively easy to follow and written quite simply (though brilliantly) and two of her books have been turned into films so if you still don't get it at the end then you can watch the film.

Online bookstores like amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com will have a good selection of french books. One that I would highly recommend would be Le Chevalier D'Harmental, or anything else by Alexandre Dumas, for that matter. Victor Hugo was another great French author.

Sorry I can't tell you what's good as my book case was full before I got round to buying any french literature.

If I loose any books and need to fill it up again I might just follow you on this one though. I might look rather well educated if I had a french book on the shelf

try here,
just click about till you find a cover you like the look of...

For sure Alexandre Dumas. I loved all his novels.
And definitely "My Father's Glory & My Mother's Castle" by Marcel Pagnol. Classic.
You can find the all on Amazon.com.

Try Madame Bovary. And Queen Margot. And The Nun.
I liked these a lot.

Any of your local bookstores should have a foreign language section.
