Some foot/wrist rattles will help her find her hands and feet which she will love to play with from 3-6mths. Other toys: brightly coloured cloths, noisy toys, things to bite and suck, squeaky rubber toys, various things to feel - soft, hard, warm, cold, sharp, and rough, and paper to crumple. Hold toy out for her to grasp.

Play peek-a-boo (hide your face with your hands or hide baby's face with cloth), baby massage, play talk (repeat syllables eg ba ba ba, ma ma ma and/or repeat baby's vocalisations), 'gymnastics' on the floor eg pull to sitting, sit with support, bear weight on legs, do 'supergirl', tickle, swing, toss, nursery rhymes (this little piggy).

Talk and play. They love it.

It's just going to be this way for a while because that's how babies are. They are very vocal and whining is part of it. Just change her activities around. No more than 15 to 20 min at a time on each, or else they whine and scream!

At 3 months, I doubt she's whining. She is just telling you she needs something. Babies need to be held and interacted with a lot. It's ok to let her look at her mobile for a while or sit in a swing, but she really needs that interaction with you. Try playing peek a boo games or singing silly little verses to her - she'll love it. She should be getting some tummy time now, too. You could try an activity pad made especially for tummy play. My little guy loved his.

There is a Baby Einstein DVD called Language Nursery which has very large simple images of toys which totally engaged my daughter at that age. In the background there is music and voices counting or saying nursery rhymes or poems in 7 different languages. It's only half an hour so you don't have to feel guilty sticking your baby in front of the TV. My friends and I found it to be the best way to get a shower and get put together while baby stayed quiet.

The most important thing for a 3 month old is to be held. Brain cell connections only form when a child is being held. When your baby is awake, for the most part, she should be in your arms. You should be talking to her, cooing in response to her noises, talking to her like she's making conversation. You should be teaching her the names of everything.

A sling can help you a lot in meeting her need to be held.

A baby who is held when she wants to be held does not get spoiled. Such a baby learns to feel loved and give love and grows up very happy because she is growing up with HER NEEDS, (not her wants) MET. Children left to be independent and not a bother grow up with an aching hole in their psyche - and not usually independent at all, cause they are thrown from the nest before they can fly. before they even have flight feathers.

Three months is very young. I presonally am not very partial to the word "whine". She is expressing herself the only way she knows how. If she is making noises she is trying to tell you something. She may be wet, tired, understimulated, overstimulated. It could be many things, and you have to get to know your baby, so you can tend to those needs. Tired signs, might be rubbing her face, yawning, turning her head, crying. Try talking to her, holding her, rocking her, helping her nap, whatever she needs.
