The two factor theory being:

Psychological Arousal- All your senses are heightened during this traumatic situation. Instead of being rational, your thoughts become twisted and distorted and you begin to connect to your captor to establish a sense of trust with them. Some do it to create a diversion, make the captor think that a bond/connection is being formed, so that the captie can make a break for it, (Where cognitions more come into play) but others go beyond that and actually 'feel' connected, due to all the heightened senses and emotional state of mind they are in.

Cognitions- Are influenced by the situation. Elements of a persons environment can have a significiant impact on their emotional state, provided the reasons for psychological arousal are ambiguous. So it is more or less a coping mechinisim. Do what you need to do to get through a situation, without allowing yourself to totally succumb to the situation.
