Or give the illusion of speeding up time.

I am going travelling in 8 months around the world and feel like I am just living in a state of 'waiting', which is a bit like mental torture.

How can I make the time go faster or relieve the frustration of waiting?

Apart from building vehicles that travel at near light speed, (a bit expensive). Psychologist think that your perception of time passes quicker when experiencing new things, hence childhood zooms past and middle age drags on and on. So try new things daily or every other day. Walk down that street you've never been down, try a new sport, read a different genre of book, better still read it in unusual places, just do new things. I try to do at least a dozen impossible things by lunch which drives all my friends and partners crazy :-) Have a good journey.
Eat new foods
Dance naked
think up new flavours of ice cream
name clouds
love
etc, etc, etc

You have to find something to distract yourself with. Some sort of portable hobby. Maybe get a gameboy or PSP... I just read a study that video games can fulfill emotional needs temporarily. Get into some big RPG's like Final Fantasy and stuff to step away from reality for a bit.

Or if that's not your style maybe you can get into some sort of craft.

Study the cultures that you will be seeing. Not only will this help take up the time, but it will serve you on your trip. You will know more about the people you meet and their beliefs and customs. You will be less apt to offend them or embarrass yourself. I am sure once you get started, you will find there is so many interesting things to learn, that you will feel like you don't have enough time.

I am in exactly the same boat but only have 2 and a half month left. The best way to ease your frustration is to enjoy the time you have left with your family and friends before you head off. Might sound corny but its working for me!! My friend who left for Australia in November gave this advice and i took him up on it. Also, reading up on where your going helps, you can never have enough info on where you plan to visit.
Hope this helps!!

Look at your watch more often than usual, and you might see it jump forward a few seconds!
