Well, if the startup item is from an icon in your startup folder, then simply go to it via Start button, and right click, delete it.

If its something that starts up and is not from the startup folder, then: Click Start, Run, type: regedt32 , click OK

Click on the word Windows (on menu bar at top) and make sure you're in HKEY LOCAL MACHINE

Go to these folders:
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version
Run

Once you get to that subfolder (Run), then highlight the key on right window pane and hit your Delete key (of the program you don't want starting up).

I happen to use Spybot (http://spybot.net) as my Anti-Spyware (freeware). It happens to have something under the Tools section called System Startup. This is pretty nifty. In this program, I can simply uncheck a box to stop it from autorunning. But it will still remember the line and not totally delete it. Later on, you can recheck the box to enable again (I think msconfig works the same way, not sure).

If you decide to go the route of Spybot, then make sure you click on Mode, Advanced mode, to make the Tools icon appear.
