This was covered in my Psychology class back in college.

Your brain is quite literally "Zooming in" on the object, because you're focusing on it. You'll notice that the surrounding objects are getting progressively blurrier as you focus on a single object.

The longer you stare at an object, the more tight your focus on that object becomes.

It's part of the reason the "Magic Eye" optical illusions work.

As for "Why" your eyes and brain collude to do that? Well, if you're hunting, focusing on the animal you;'re pursuing is going to help you catch, kill and eat it. :)

the answers all above and below me are ridiculus, u see. sometimes if we see somthing for a certian time , we can see it become larger , tads ur Q, now my A--- its become large becoz we too focus on one thing , and so it become large in ur imagination world , but in real world its not
