First start with person-to-person conversations. Little chat - does not have to be scientific analysis! Harmless topics about the weather, the school, pets, some local events. Little by little you will built up self confidence on this special function and you will be able to expand your communication skills to more people.
Fight back your fear for being criticized or disapproved. Be natural and simple for a start and everything will run smoothly.

Not sure if you mean talking to people or talking in front of a group. Here are ideas for both situations.
Communicating with People:
Learn to become a great listener. Don't worry about what you're going to say. Focus on what the other person is saying and ask open ended questions (What made you decide to go to... How did you become interested in...). Be friendly and look approachable and open. Smile and relax.
Communicating in Front of a Group:
If you are talking about a communications class that you are taking and have a presentation here are some steps you can take, preferably in this order!
1. Read it out loud many times.
2. If you're allowed use props and or handouts to take the focus off of yourself.
3. Get a friend to tape you giving the speech.
4. Give your speech in front of a few friends.
Hope this helps! Good luck.

Everyone has to start some where. I have yet to meet a person
who didn't put their foot in their mouth at one time or another. I
would go where you feel comfortable and start a conversation
about anything. After awhile you'll be doing it without even thinking.

Experience in any given setting usually remedies fear. For example, if you make speeches regularly, you can overcome your fear of public speaking.

I assume you mean public speaking? If so, then here's the way - quit looking in the mirror at how YOU are doing, and look instead at THEM - your audience. You are not there to talk to yourself, you are there to talk to them. Concentrate on what THEY need from you. They don't care about you, they care about what they can learn from you. It really isn't about you, and if you make if about you, then you are not doing your job. To be self-conscious means to be conscious of your self. So direct your consciousness instead OUTWARD at THEM and there will be none left to look at you.
All you need is to be well prepared in your topic, make sure your fly is up, and then go do what you are there to do.
