If I click on the this computer icon, it shows I have 2 cd rom players. One for dvd's and rewritables and one for regular cd's, but I have only one player. Now it only opens dvd's and rewritables. It used to function just fine, I just started my computer yesterday and suddenly it detected 2.
How can I get it to function normally again?

Try running a system recovery (if you have windows XP)
and pick a date when your computer was ok.

start.. program files... accessories.. system tools... system restore

Have u installed any Virtual CD software or Nero Image Drive(it coming with nearly all nero packs even in demo). Remember if u installed Virtual CD, Alcohol, Deamon Tools etc. It could be virtual Drive, if not then right click on my computer>>Properties>>Advanced>>Device Manager>>And click on icon of this shadow drive>> Right click and select Uninstall.
That's it.

is not necessary a problem . posib. you are instaled a program ( like : nero , daemon tools , alcohool , etc.). this program create a ''virtual'' dvd-rom . what for? in some games you need a cd or dvd to play game . but , depends on cd(dvd) speed or quality ( scratches , dust etc) , it may happend to block or late .
or , you can create , with one of this software ( not only my list ) a ''image'' from original cd ( a clone ) and use like a real cd. how? it's another question...
ps: escuse my poor english . i'm from romania
good luck

First, I would try to get a good anti-virus program if you don't already. I have norton, but honestly it never finds viruses. Try McAfee, and run it up. If nothing is found, try using Window's system restore and set it back to the date you last remember the drive working normally. If that doesn't work and it is really getting to you, I would reformat your computer. If you have any other further questions, feel free to email me bacch18@yahoo.com.

Open the device manager and uninstall both of the devices. Then restart your computer. Windows should auto-detect 'new' hardware and install the drive - hopefully correctly this time.

have you ever offered a spare ide cable to attempt? you may also attempt connecting the CDROM to a similar cable as your difficult force - be particular to regulate it to a slave! verify the cables are seated ideas-blowing at both ends too. HTH.
