we are both retired on a fixed income so is there something to do that don't involve spending a lot of money? We like to spend some of our time away from the tourist traps.

I'd suggest the Gulf coast since the water there is a lot prettier in my opinion. It'll have that Caribbean color because it's so shallow in the gulf and not so many waves.

I love Naples, but it can be expensive. I'd suggest trying to find a spot on the ocean, just north of there, somewhere between the Naples and Ft. Myers. Then if you want to head out shopping (window shopping) in Naples or hoping on a casino sunset cruise out of Ft. Myers, you can do that, or heading south of Naples one day for a air boat alligator ride, with dinner on the bay, but most of your days can be spent on the beach, relaxing and not spending money.

Well..those are my thoughts. I've also been told that further north up by the panhandle...is very nice there too.

Wish you lots of fun! Try this site for some cheap travel deals by bidding for a spot on priceline, but then you won't be able to pick a hotel on the ocean (my advice..spend the extra $ for a hotel on the water) or private home rentals... iBtraveling.com
I usually find a good deal on that site. Hope you can too.

Sanibel/Captiva Islands are amoung the most beautiful anywhere and the shelling/sharks teeth are a found everywhere.

there is a park in Winter Haven that is lower in cost and very well received by all ages.. Cypress Gardens.

Get a Florida drivers liscence as soon as possible and AARP membership.... between the two there are alot of good discounts out there. Year passes for parks are affordable with discounts and then try and go to them without spending $$$ (a game my wife and I play with our kids at Busch Gardens)
