Research the subject for details of the expeditions there have so far been to Mars.
As for Life and what conditions it needs?
Forget other planets for a moment, take a look around the earth instead. There are 'pools' of life around Volcanic vent of superheated water in the deepest parts of the ocean.
There are lifeforms in the Glacial Ice Flows that survive immensely low temperatures.
In deserts around the world it may not rain for 20 years BUT when it does, life erupts as soon as the moisture hits.
As humans from the planet Earth, we cannot know all the requirements for life to exist!
All we can do is base our theories on what life on THIS planet needs.
Other planets lifeforms might not need Oxygen, liquid water, light or even Carbon which is the main component to life here!
The debate rages as to whether life 'exists' on Mars but there is a high probability that even if theres no life now, THERE WAS!
The newest way to try and prove it is to send up a probe that can dig int the Martian soil for at least a couple of metres. If there is life it may be under the soil in a type of suspended animation endlessly waiting for heat to return and for the rains to come.
Little Green Men?
I doubt it.
Little Green Plants of some sort?
Possibly.
Little micro-organisms?
I believe so!
If there does prove to be life there, then the chances of 'intelligent' life elsewhere are significantly higher.
Scientists have speculated for years concerning the Intelligent Life elsewhere debate. To have 2 planets in a system at least doubles the chances. This is because the 'thin' band around a star where a planet could be to get the maximum 'goodness' (where our planet is!), can then be extended further if Mars does indeed contain or at least HAD contained life!

I think the question should be "Was there life on Mars?"
The Mars environment now is hostile to life as we know it to be here on earth. What puzzled scientists for years was what appears to be traces of civilization ( dried up oceans, water aqueduct systems etc). from looking at Mars.
Did Earthlings descend from Mars? Ooooo. Not green beings but red beings. So being grown up boys and girls who can build probes and rockets and cameras, earth sent the first probes in the 60s. Some burnt. Mariner 3 Mariner 4. The latest is the Mars Orbiter which has been sending stunning pictures.
Anyway, there was nothing that exciting to report, and so far, still work in progress.
Keep watching the news from the following websites. Happy Mars studying!

The main thing life needs is water, and the only water on Mars is what you will see in its Polar Ice caps. But the planet is frozen over, because of its distance form the Sun, that life can't exist (a mean -200 degrees C during Winter) as well as carbon dioxde atmosphere, just to name a few.

Perhaps the most simplest form of cell-life but thats doubtful and even if it exists... not exactly anything to do backflips about.
There is life elsewhere in the universe though. Issac Asimov wrote a book (non-fiction) speculating the size of the universe... and his conclusions were that there are billions of earth type planets capable of supporting intelligent life.

I think that some animals formed from one cell are there. ( Excuse me I'm a Romanian girl and I don't know very well how to spell). I think that you understand what I want to tell you!
