Yes. It's the same network that counts, not what payment method you use. However, there are some of the older handsets that won't take a contract sim, so check it out at www.o2.co.uk first as they have a list of these old phones.

yes all O2 branded phones are compatible with both O2 contract, and pay as you go sim cards

sure it will definitely work. Always same company's sim cards fit into phones from the same network. Only if you want to mix like: T-Mobile with O2, then you have a problem...

yes as long as you have an o2 phone you can put any o2 sim card into it, it does not matter whether it is contract or not.
