I'm a newly qualified stylist unable to find work as i have no experience...i have been looking for four months now with no luck!! How can i gain experience if no one will take me on! I am thinking of taking up a temporary administrative position until something in a salon comes up...although i don't want to give up the hairdressing after 2years training?
Any other stylists had this same problem, if so how did you overcome it?
I don't know what to do! the longer i'm not styling hair the more my confidence is failing!!!
:-(

Stick in there. Just keep your spirit up and continue to look for a salon to give you a chance. If you have the funds I would say try and get into some hair shows and classes. That way you can show the Salons that you have been mastering your skills and continuing to learn. Also taking that temp job might be a good thing you get to met new people and those people might know someone to help or could become possible clients. One thing for sure is that once you get a job at a Salon make sure that you are prepared to sit. You need to stay there as many hours as you can even if you don't have one client. I use to work at a salon I was a hair dresser assistant. i have seen some many people come in with no clients and build up fast cause they stuck it out and sat there hours and hours. then i have seen people that wouldn't come in or only come in for a few hours if they had no one. What ever happens I wish you good luck!!

Why dont you go mobile, that way you are your own boss. There arel ots of people out there that cant find the time to go to a salon, or are house bound. The only down side is doing your own books, but as long as you keep them simple you should be ok if you have admin experience, and getting clients in the first place, but this could be achieved by placing ads in local shops, health centres etc, and then by work of mouth. My best friend did this and now she's turning down clients as she is so busy.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Why not put an ad in your local paper/newsagents etc and do some home hairdressing? Or do family and friends for a cut price and take pictures? If you build up your portfolio, someone will eventually take you on.

Alternatively, do some work experience (for free) in a salon with the hope they'll see how good you are and take you on permanently.
