This morning at 10 am they are going to put this on my cervix. I am pretty thick and high the doctor said. Also I will be 38 weeks sunday. What can I execpt from this gel. What did it do to you if you had this done and how long was it before labor started for you if it did. Thank you!

It will cause your cervix to soften, thin out and dilate. If you fail to dilate, they will give you Pitocin (not potassium) to help the cervix contract more and cause it to dilate.

It may be uncomfortable for a while and they will not want to give you meds for that because it will stop the labor process, if given too early.

Take some music, some magazines or a good book to keep yourself occupied during this time.

I had to be induced at 40 wks 5 days for low fluid. I don't recall if I was dilated at all, probably no more than 1cm. I had to stay overnight at the hospital and received 4 doses at 4 hour intervals. In between I walked the hallways a LOT to try to get things moving. The next morning I was at 4cm and contracting regularly, and my midwife said if we had not been on a time deadline because of the fluid, she'd let me progress on my own from there. However, we needed to get the baby born that day for sure, so I started pitocin at 11am and the baby was born at 5:30 pm. I did not have to have an epidural, but did take a little demerol in transition. Depending on the reason why you need an induction, you may or may not need pitocin. If you can avoid it without endangering the baby, I would. It makes your contractions like a machine.

It will soften and dilate your cervix. If it doesn't take this time they will do it again and again until it does. You know the natural version of that stuff is human sperm. Pretty sick huh?

well sorry to say but everyone is different. my sister had the jell done and it helped a little but she wouldn't move past 3cm so they had to give her potassium to induce her. from start to finish it was 47 hours for her. good luck hopefully it will go fast for you.

It softens your cervix and helps thin it out.
