Not sure what you mean.

The original 13 States declared independece from Great Britian on July 4th 1776.

While the Declaration Indpendence was a huge step forward in political philosophy, it didn't mean a whole lot on the ground until Washington forced Lord Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

Britian officially recognized American Independence at the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

The US tried a "Confederation" for a few years, and it just didn't work out. Democracy is hard, but at least in those days we didn't have CNN telling us that it was a disaster and would never work, yada, yada, yada...... It went on like this for several years, but it was such a mess they called a Constitutional Convention, and (in secret, try that today!) wrote the U.S. Constitution.

Different states ratified the Constitution on different dates. You can find a list here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Constitution
