To get 1 cent, there is one combination (1 one cent piece)
To get 5 cents there are two combinations (5 one cents or a 5 cent piece)
To get 10 cents, you can either have two lots of 5 cents (each in one of two different ways) or 10 cents = 2 * 2 + 1 = 5
To get 25 cents you can have two 10 cents and 1 5 cent (remember, each "10 cents" is either a 10 cent coin or further breakdowns of that) or a 25 cent coin

So 2*5 + 2 + 1 = 13

50 cents is either 5 * 10 cents, 2 * 25 cents or a 50 cent coin (5 * 5) + (2 * 13) + 1) = 52 ways

1 US$ = 2*50 cents = 104 ways

My solution = 104 different ways

I don't know but it's definitely over 100. There are 50 ways to do it just using a $.50 piece and that is just scratching the surface. I hope you know the answer becasue now I'm curious.
