She is the naieve sister of Bernardo who has just come from Peurto Rico. She is working in a dress shop in a Spanish slum in New York among lots of racism between the Peurto Rican's and the white people. She is kind hearted, naieve (as I said), and quickly has some puppy love developing. She is adventerous and nervous and follows her heart.
I would say she is supposed to be about 16 in the movie (though she looks much older).
Her character is based of Juliet from Romeo and Juliet if that helps any : )
