You should use 'hanged' when refering to an execution, suicide or accidental death caused by suspension by the neck from a single cord. In other situations you'd use 'hung'.

You use "hanged" when it is a person being hanged and "hung" when it's a coat or Christmas decorations etc. I'm guessing it's "hanged" for animate (living objects) and "hung" for inanimate objects. Also, because the two have different meanings I think it's because although they look the same, they're not MEANT to mean the same thing - like "to" and "too" but "hang" and "hang" just HAPPEN to be spelt the same. That's my take on it anyways.
Hope that makes sense

Hanged is the past tense of hang and hung is the past participal. Therefore. correctly the boy hanged himself. Or the boy has hung himself. Therefore saying I hung up my coat is improper.

Hanged is when you talk about the capital punishment.
Hung is the past tense, or past participle of hang.
When you say the boy hung himself that means he didn't die. He was hanging from a place.
When the boy hanged himself he suffocated himself to death.
The boy , who hanged himself, his body hung there till morning.

There are basically two words "hang" in the English language which have different past-tenses. "Hang" meaning to execute has the past-tense "hanged", the other verb "hang" has the past-tense "hung". So the murderer was hanged but the meat was hung.

I think everyone has said it all really, but I will add something: when referring to someone being sentenced to death by hanging, it is the only time that hanged is used: has been hanged, will be hanged, being hanged. It doesn't matter what tense it is in it is always hanged. anything else is always hung or hang. The only exception to this that I can think of is: I will hang you or he/she will hang you (him, her, them or us). I hope I haven't confused matters.

The boy hanged himself (correct - but don't know why!), but you would say you hung your coat up - weird language!

"Hanged" is reserved for human beings only when they are hanged from the neck until dead.
Everything else -- pheasants, clothes on pegs, pictures on walls, etc is hung. In fact, if I am on a bolting horse and survive the incident, I can afterwards describe myself as having hung on for grim life.
It's as easy as that!
