The exchange 555 doesn't exist in the private sector. Years ago they would give real numbers and then the person who had that number would get a ton of calls. At some point they decided to use 555 for all numbers on TV etc so no one would complain and get harassed.

So they won't get sued for giving out a real phone number. There is no real phone number with 555 as the prefix.
In the 80s, there was a song called 867-5309 Jenny that was real popular. To this day, people who have that number will still get crank calls from people asking for Jenny.

If they use a real phone number, people might call it and it would disturb the people whose real number it was. It could also bring on all types of lawsuits against the production company, so it's easier to just use a fake area code.
