It's a form of advertising to get people to want to watch the movie. If nobody knows anything about a movie, the chances are they will not watch it, but if they have scene a juicy trailor about the movie that makes them want to watch the movie then they most certainly will!

Because they are to lazy to make B movies now ( a small history lesson:in the olden day's you used to get two film's on the program the A film, the main one and the B film. It was not as good as the A film but it was much better then having to put up with the same trailers week in week out with the same annoying Yankee voice saying "from the makers of (put at lest 5 film's here)" or "coming this fall" at the start of them.)

A movie trailer spices up the film and tricks you into believing its going to be fantastic. If you look closely at trailers after you have seen the movie you will realise that it may contain lines not included in the movie e.g. titanic trailer, and usually the sequence of scenes is rearranged. I found several trailers brilliant but over rated the movie making me a lil disappointed when I watched the actual film, e,g, Troy, Shallow Hall, Hitchikers guide to the galaxy.
But nevertheless, movie trailers are fun to watch on their own and we usually make it a point to catch the movie preshow just to watch them.

so you have to go and buy more sweeties before the movie has even started. total rip off.
incidentally these wee previews of upcoming films were, many years ago, shown at the end of a movie (esp on videos) that is why they are called 'trailers' ie they trail the main film.
wonder what they should really be called hmmmmm....

To promote a film, in the hope people will say ,'oh, that looks good', and go and see it.
In the same way, a single is just a promotional tool to get you to buy an album, or commercials are used to promote a product.
It's called 'advertising'.

Its quite clever, you'll watch a trailor and not know whats going on.......so you watch it......watch the trailor again afterwards and you automatically think that they spoil the film.
The only exception is Borat - That trailor spoilt that film, think I saw every joke in the trailors so it wasnt funny when i actually watched.
