It depends on the type of dreams you're having. If you are having random dreams with nothing that represents anything of meaning to you or do not have any real-life memories or experiences relating to your dream, like an emotional or physical element than you're likely to forget them after you are awake, as it was a series of thoughts or events with no meaning. Its called dream amnesia, if you want to remember your dreams, try keeping a dream journal & right down what you remember 1st thing when you wake up.

Dreams have served their purpose once you wake up. Your mind needs to stay active even though you are resting, otherwise, the shock of waking up again may be too much.Dreams give you a sense of continutiy and belonging even if they are not real.

because sleep has different cycles...you dream during the r.e.m. cycle or "rapid eye movement" cycle. if you wake up during that cycle then you rember the dream. if you dont wake up then you'll go on to the next cycle and forget.
