I often see players jumping when they are kiting during combat in World of Warcraft. Can anyone tell me what this achieves?

Jumping around and changing direction actually does help in some situations. If a player can't target you, it's very hard to land any melee attacks! Being a pally, with very few AoE spells and only a couple of judgements that don't require targetting, it's very annoying to fight someone with melee attacks when they're running circles around me and jumping. Not only does this hurt your ability to target, but I'm sure everyone has seen the message "you're too far away" or "you're not facing the right direction" when trying to melee something.

it depends.

if it is a hunter jumping while kiting a mob, that's known as a jump shot and is the easiest way for a hunter to kite - shoot mob, run, jump and turn midair, shoot, land facing the direction you were running, continue... repeat. it works well, and its less likely the mob he or she is kiting will catch up.

if they're jumping around while duelling or in pvp, maybe their logic is that they'll be harder to target... truthfully, i'm not sure, and i wouldn't think it would make that much of a difference - once you're already targetted, no matter how much jumping you do it isn't going to make a diference.

i tend to jump alot when not in battle, but never in battle (itchy space bar finger syndrome).

They think they are in an FPS game such as Counter Strike or Unreal tournament & in thoes games jumping maks you a hard target to aim on as for WoW well it's just a bad habit!

err... probably achieves nothing... or it might, because i think running away helps you to dodge, for example. it's one of those things WOW doesn't make clear, so who knows.
