Security is the protection from external and internal threats. With regards to Africa, it must be free from foreign intervention and influence so that it will exist peacefully as a continent.

Fraginal-Ako do you really believe that if foreign influence disappeared from Africa it would work together as one?

Get real, there are numerous conflicts in Africa that have nothing to do with external influences. Rwanda with the Hutus and Tutsis comes to mind.

Fraginal, I appreciate your view and perhaps I was too strong in my response. You provide educated and precise answers to questions on Y! answers.

To answer the question:
Security is as stated by the first poster internal and external safety from threats. In Africa, that translates to different things depending on the region and history.

In South Africa, Security primarily means safety from threats of crime, specifically homicide etc. whilst in Somalia security means re-establishment of a government that will help protect every day people from the different groups being support from within and without.

Africa is an incredibly complex continent with very different cultures and religions. Colonization made Africa better in some ways and worse (much worse sometimes) in others. I think that an excellent place to start would be the books, "Me Against My Brother", "The Graves are not Yet Full" and "The State of Africa: A History of Fifty Year of Independence" which I provide a link to below:
