This is my personal definition for males. A transvestite is usually a person who started wearing the other genders clothing when he was a small child, usually starting with a female relative as that is all that was available. The feelings that came from this was comfort and security, not sexual. These people usually grow up to pass, meaning they completely take on the dress, mannerisms and personality of the other gender successfully enough that they are accepted for the gender they are emulating. My ex husband called himself an illusionist. They spend more time actually learning the art of hiding one gender and becoming another. They can be either heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual, but usually they are heterosexual.

A crossdressing is someone who responds sexually to dressing like the other gender. It is usually kink related and extrememly compulsive in nature. A man who crossdresses is typically humiliated by the experience and the degradation turns him on. These people usually have a fetish about certain clothing and are not really interested in passing as they want people to know they are a man in women's clothing. Many are Type A personalities, in high powered careers and seek out a sexual release by being degraded in this way. Many take it to an extreme, and the cross dressing is very exaggerated. Most of these men are heterosexual, and many of them are very conservative and part of their kink is to hide their fetish from their vanilla wives and family. Or they involve their spouse (many dominant women cross dress their men), and its a win win situation. Crossdressers who are open and seek out a partner to participate on a relationship level, are usually happy and satisfied with their lives and do not see the crossdressing as degrading.

A transvestite is someone who crossdresses for kicks and is usually straight or bisexual.

Crossdresser is an umbrella term for anyone who wears clothes belonging to/made for the opposite gender. This includes drag queens, transvestites, etc.

I'm guessing transexual was meant to be in there too? A transexual is someone who has an operation to appear more like the opposite gender, mostly to aid in their own self-identity.

A transvestite is usually a male (by popular labeling) who dresses and lives a part of their life as a female, out in the open. Quite often they are men who have a strong identity towards female and may progress further into reassignment surgery to become anatomically female.

A cross dresser is a man who enjoys (for sexual pleasure) to dress as a female. This is quite often a heterosexual man who may experiment further with his cross dressing and have sexual liaisons with females while dressed to enhance his pleasure. He may also fantasize and peruse homosexual encounters.

Transgendered is a person who identifies as the opposite sex or gender that they were born into. It is not sexually based it is their true identity and knowledge of their gender that comes from a far deeper place then sexual. It is just like anyone who knows who they are male or female but it is having the body of the wrong gender to walk around in.

Technically it's the same thing, but the term 'transvestite' has connotations to men who dress in women's clothing for sexual reasons whilst 'cross-dresser' simply refers to a person who wears the clothing of the opposite sex (e.g. for relaxation).
