Okay folks, I've emailed a reply to the Asker of this question with a couple of links in hopes that it will enlighten and prove me competent and NOT ignorant on this subject, which is apparently under debate by the Asker.
Michael J if you care to share, you may post what I sent to you.
After you read it and have checked out the links, you may believe what you like. I just think people should be allowed to make an informed decision based on facts. I've programmed barcodes/barcode readers for a few different types of barcodes and I have a good understanding if not complete understanding of several more.
Michael J is in Scotland and I am in the U.S. I've NOT programmed for European Standards but I do have some knowledge of the system anyway as the EAN (in Europe) is related to and based off of the UPC (in the U.S.A./Canada).

I believe that I am correct.

Not true. A lot of barcodes hold dates in them.

Yes. notice that there are several thin lines and 6 thicker lines. those are numbers .
