The airwaves are owned by the public but the media wants us to forget that. They have a mandate to provide broadcasting that benefits the public but they seldom do. There used to be things like the Fairness Doctrine that helped to ensure that more than just one slant is heard, but that was dismantled during the Reagan years. Things like reasonable access, sponsorship identification (so you know who is sponsoring something---sometimes the government puts things on and you don't know it, for example, or corporate sponsors), free time for political candidates, and so on. Check the page of the Media Access Project below.

There is no check on the power of the news media - nor is there any accountability.
Look at Iraq for example. The media tells a completely different story than do the eyewitnesses. Here it is a case of 'bad news sells.'

Not at all, if you are talking about the USA. We do not want the media checked or controlled or restrained. Freedom of the press is the issue. Who decides on where the limit is? The government? The same Bush government that falsified WMD data and altered scientific data on global warming to have both conform to its political philosophy?
Freedom of the press is essential in this country. Let the New York Times and Washington Post and Rush and Fox be unrestrained

It is not kept in check, that is the problem. Media brainwashes people into thinking the way they think , which is usually not the truth, but it sells papers and pays their salaries, so they do not care. They need to be restrained, if you figure out a way, let me know, I will vote for you.

It's not kept in check about 5 guys own it all here in the states. They get what they want put on the air and in print. Best thing to do is limit the number of com companys any one person can control/own.

Try a system whereby the government funds several independent media outlets, requiring a certain percentage of broadcasting to be politics, internal affairs, current events, etc. Make sure the government, although it finds the media, cannot interfere. try to reduce the "entertainment: aspect of news and get ethical journalists who will concentrate on prioviding real news instead of what Paris Hilton was wearing last night,

it isn't kept in check. THe media is censored by the same people who think it's okay to end affirmative action, take away our freedoms, keep aperson on life supports against her wishes, invade a country on a premise of imaginary weapons of mass destruction etc etc etc.
So what you get is a media that bans cigarette ads but uses sex, fear and "reality TV" (ugh") to dull our minds and control the masses.
A great question with no easy fix!!!!!!!!

It is not! I was born in 1960. I am oldest of 10 children. I have realized all younger siblings, born7 to 10 years later are in some hypnotic trance.
Since Reagan betrayed the public and handed over American PUBLIC AIRWAVES and started the mass rip off of allowing an informed public, he caved to big corporations and allow the buy out of all mass media to corporations. They distort, omit. are intimidated to tell of Palestine, true evil carried out buy the true axis of evil in Middle East.

How is it kept in check? Simple.
IT'S NOT.
We need more conservative people working in the system, not just socialist liberals.
