As much as I hate to admit it both gandamack and Malikail have both given you the answer.

Something happened and it has less to do with the American consumer turning away from supporting Union work then it does with the Unions turning away from remembering why they were so successful, the American consumer. Basically, you got to expensive for us.

Somebody (I am not going to say who) but somebody took our "Made in America" pride, exploited it and turned it into dollar signs.

Union workers got fat, lazy and happy. The quality of their work dropped to below the quality of work in developing countries, especially in the pacific rim.

Union leadership became even more greedy and corrupt, demanded extremely high wages for the crappy work the union produces and companies went elsewhere to get the same work done.

you are right, once having something "Union Made in the USA" meant you had purchased something made to extremely high standards here at home, and paid a fair price.

Today buying something "Union Made in the USA" means you paid too much for poorly made crap here at home.

Companies got greedy and consumers got cheap. With that combination a living wage gets harder to find every day.
