Any soft, unpasteurized cheese can potentially be harmful during pregnancy. Brie, feta, Camembert and goat's cheese should all be avoided. They may contain a bacteria called Listeria that can be very dangerous for the unborn baby. Not a chance I'd want to take! By the way, this bacteria can also be found in ready to eat meats like hot dogs and deli meats.

The whole listeria concern is new and rather stupid if you ask me. It is a new concern for pregnant women. I had a baby in 2000 and in 2003 and was never told to avoid lunch meat and soft cheese. Now suddenly I'm told to avoid it because of possible listeria? Then that means I should avoid fresh fruits and veggies as well in case of e. coli.

It won't be long before pregnant women are only allowed to have a pill and no food at all. I've continued to eat lunch meat and feta cheese. I don't eat it a lot but I'm not going to let it worry me. It just isn't logical. Everything has a potential to be harmful and we can't live our lives in bubbles.
