Run hot water (from the faucet) onto a wash cloth. Ring cloth with hands and gently place it over nose and sinus area (area between eyes). The warmth will soften and loosen congestion. Do it repeatedly. Three or four times. Baby should breathe more easily.
Another approach (used by my stepmother on me when I was a kid) was to rub a little dab of vicks mentholatum rum on my chest--under my undershirt. I would inhale the fumes from the stuff and it would clear my nose so that I could fall asleep. Not sure this is wise for a 5-month old though.

Do u have one of those nose suction bulbs??? i would use that and place him to sleep in a car seat or on an incline so that gravity can do it's magic...Sometimes sleeping upright will allow the baby to at least breathe enough to get some sleep.. Otherwise call a dr and ask them if there is safe OC medicine u can use to give him some relief at night.. Hope this helps!!

You can try to use the bulb syringe to suction it out a bit, but my kids always hated it and cried so much that it seemed counterproductive. We used PediaCare - the clear, nonstaining formula, preferably. You could also prop the head of their crib slightly by placing something under the mattress - they make wedges for this, I think, but we just used a folded towel. Don't prop it too much, though, or the baby will just slide to the bottom of the crib! You could also use one of those plug-in vaporizers by Vicks. Vicks also makes a Baby Rub that might help relieve some of his symptoms and help you all sleep better!

For my infant my pediatrian suggested a bran called Little Noses. It does help. Also baby Ayr solution and suction out his nose a minute after you have put a couple drops in each nostil. It helps. Your baby might be teething. When my son just cut his first tooth last month he had a horible stuffy nose.

What works for my 5 month old is to first suction out the nose periodically while he is awake, and while he is sleeping plug in one of the vics vapor plugs. If you are unsure you can always call his doctors office.

buy some saline nose drops (its really cheap) and put a few drops in your babys nose and use a bulb syringe to suck all the junk out. i also use a tiny tiny bit of vicks on my son. everywhere i read not too but i think its only because the menthol is strong and can be too much for their skin. but i put a dab on his chest and nose and miraculously he gets better. works everytime.

little noses and the suction bulb are the only safe things (medicine wise) at this age (or so i think). you can also sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running. good luck!

no way to get rid of his cold because there is no cure. i know its hard. u can always give him cold medicine to help relieve his discomfort but it won't get rid of the cold completely.
