There are a few different theories about what a Shamanism does. Basically (what I learned from college), Shamanists are doctors that heal people. They heal not only by medicine however more important, spiritually. They have a connection to the world and beyond. It is usually refered to Native American Indians however there are some beliefs that there are Shamanism practices in other countries such as Korea, Mongolia and so on.
I have attached some links that I think will help you out.

'Shamanism is an occult path claiming contact with supernatural entities for a variety of religious or, today, even secular purposes. Traditional shamanism is where the shaman functions as healer, spiritual leader, and mediator between the spirits and people. Shamanistic psychotherapy, a novel form of modern fringe psychology, is where shamanistic techniques are employed allegedly to produce "psychospiritual integration," explore the unconscious, contact one’s "higher self," and so on. Shamanistic medicine includes the application of animistic and various ancient witchcraft techniques to health care. It may involve either shamanism itself as a means to health and enlightenment (shaman initiation and following the shaman’s "life path"), or the varied use of specific shamanistic techniques in conjunction with a particular health program (e.g., visualization, altered states of consciousness, dream work, or the use of "power animals," which are spirits that appear in the form of animals, birds, or other creatures in order to instruct the shaman)........... Have a look at Sacred Hoop; the magazine also has a website and a discussion forum.(www.sacredhoop.co.uk. or maybe .org. Google it)
Shamanism isn't specifically pagan and has been found in almost all major religions as a form of mysticism.

Alright, to contradict "Sam", a Native American won't do you any good!!!! This is because Native Americans do not practice shamanism in any way, shape, or form. Seeing as I am a Native American, believe me when I say this is not the chosen religion. And a word of advice: NO ONE visit a reservation and ask for the local shaman!!! There are plenty of places to hide bodies on reservations and no one seems to look there anymore. Refer to them as medicine men/women. ok, i'm done
