There is some sound, but it is very low and that is at the top sound level.Does anyone know how I can rectify this.

Make sure all the volume sliders are at the top. Iether that or get some more speakers. sometimes the other volume controls are down and that effects the sound.

Make sure the jack is plugged firmly into the jack. If its pulled out, even a micro millimeter, it can knock the sound down.
Also, double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner by the system clock. It will open Volume control (not the single slider one that is accessed by a single click, the but the multi slider kind that is accessed by a double click.
Make sure the one labled Wave is turned up and also the master volume slider. If you're playing a CD, then make sure the CD one is turned up, etc.

go to control pannel and then sound and audio divices then adjust ur speaker voloum also click on the voloum Icon on the task bar and make it high, then right click on that and click open voloum control then make all the sounds high!
and at last take a look at ur players voloum make that high too
