Video editing requires three things to be efficient:
A good graphics card, a good hard drive, and ram.
The graphics card actually does all the video editing, and the hard drive loads the files, which are very very large for video editing. The RAM stores open files, which is important for huge video files to be edited efficiently.
Video editing doesnt require a video game quality video card, so a nvidia 7100gs to a 7300 would be more than enough.
You are going to want to get a SATA II hard drive, which is 3 times as fast as a normal hard drive, but the same price. It just needs a SATA or SATA II compatible motherboard.
The cpu should be dual core, any will do. The speed is not as important as the ability to have one whole core dedicated to editing.
you should get 1gb (1024mb) of RAM or higher. Its not uncommon for video editing computers to have 2-4gb.

Haven't you guys heard/read about Conroe/Allendale? AMD cpu better than Intel? Athlon 64 vs Pentium 4? that's an 3 years old pc history.

The fact is, now AMD are still seriously researching for their 45nm die processor while Intel have their 45nm prototypes tested and published days ago.

Why? because at the time when Athlon 64 X2 held the crown they'd been over relaxed so weakening their research.

People are talking about multi cores now since it could doubled or even tripled the performance speed.

People who take video editing seriously use an APPLE. As a matter of fact, the movie Lord fo the Rings was put together on an old MAC. At any rate, you can do rpetty damn good with a regular PC. I would recomend an AMD Turion processor-it has faster clock speeds than an Pentium of similar speed and AMD's are very friendly on your wallet. I would aslo reccomend 1ghz DDR-RAM or above for lengthy video editing b/c compiling projects are temporarily stored in memory. Also a fast Huge hard drive, storing video files uncompressed from a camcorder takes up alot of room on a hard disk depending on the lenght.
