OMG the book is scarier! Actually it's the scariest book I've ever read. When you watch the movie, you see stuff and maybe not that bad but when you're reading the book, you're going with your imagination and it stuck in your head! I watched the movie before I read the book, the worst thing was, I couldn't stop reading it. Good luck... he he

If you were born before 1980, then watching the Exorcist would be a terrifying experience!
If you're born after 1980, then you are desensitized to this movie because there are more scarier movies than the Exorcist now. And since the movies now are computer generated, it doesn't leave much to the imagination anymore. That's why most horror movies today are so generic and copied over and over and over.

I would say that the book would be scarier. I have a high tolerence to the whole 'fear factor' but no matter how good the movie is, nothing can be as creative and frightning as your imagination.
Curl up in your bed, put on a small light to read your book with and enjoy

the book was equally scary when I read it in the 70s, there have been so many terrifying books written since then I'm not sure the exorcist would have the same impact today

Depending on your imaginative potential.. it could be either :). The movie is more explicit though and violence is at it's best. The book can also offer you scary sensations, if you read it in a medium lighted place.. lonely.. at night.. boo ! :) kidding
My suggestion is first read the book (it's surely more detailed).. then see the movie.
Enjoy !

Read before you watch the movie. It was real scary for me but i don't get nightmares. Just tell yourself it's just a movie. No one is dead for making that movie!

The novels are always better than movies. A movie is the directors interpretation. Books are up to the reader to interpret.

I don't know, but the "edited" version of the movie I can't even watch. Its not the face of Linda Blair's character, its that voice! Gives me the creeps, the first time I saw that I had a nightmare about it too, ugh....gives me the willies!!!...
