Imagine you see a friend from school at a school reunion and find out that his parents were murdered, not only that but he now dresses up as a bat, drives a car that sort of looks like a bat, lives in a bat cave and has all these little gadgets that are shaped like bats that he uses to fight crime with.
Of course you'd think of Spiderman and think 'OK, he's been bitten by a some kind of Amazonian bat and thats why he is the way he is' but THEN you find out that no, he wasn't bitten by a bat or zapped with a laser or anything else, just that his parents died so he started dressing up as a bat.

Is it just me or is this the kind of guy that comes to work oneday with a loaded gun in his briefcase?

All the other superheroes have a good reason to be the way they are, Batman just seems plain good old fashioned psycho.

Any thoughts?

I like Batman, as he is just a regular guy, with a mission. He didn't get super powers from an alien source, but is just totally human. He illustrates what any one of us could do if we were driven by purpose..(and rich)
That is what I find most appealing, is his commitment to a purpose..without it being something that was thrust on him.

Well, let's say you're a small child with a paralyzing fear of bats. (You fell down a well and had hundreds of the flying rats attack you). A little later on you are out on the town with your parents and are inches away from them as they are shot to death. (The bad guy points the gun at you but is scared off by a passing patrol car). Compelled by a sense of responsibility you make a solemn vow to the memories of your parents that you will do whatever is within your power to make sure no other child suffers as you did. Using your own fear (of bats) you take on the persona of a living nightmare... letting go of all the anger and trauma you have held inside for years you focus all aspects of your life to scaring criminals into rehabilitation. Batman's reasons for being a vigilante so closely resemble Spider-man's that it is interesting you used him as your exaple. Both were attacked by the creature they resemble (now comfortable with something they used to fear). Both lost prominant family members to criminal violence. Batman is the type of guy that would come to work with a gun, if he did not have his 'hero' activities to focus on.
So yes... he's looney, and yes... I would sleep better at night if he were real.

BATMAN is more than that, but I feel ya. He is CRAZY and a Control Freak. You have to be Crazy to have that much money and just have no life outside of being BATMAN.
At least Iron Man is a drunk and a Super HOE, but he doesn't try save everything. BATMAN is The"Ultimate Control Freak" and that is the same reason why his team ends up leaving him.
They don't hide that he's CRAZY. They just also show how Tough, Cool-*** HERO he can be too.

Of course, that has always been his appeal.
Just like the Punisher, neither have "superpowers" just their thirst for revenge, their own sense of justice, and a huge arsenal of gadget/weoponry.

Hey, in another time and place, Bruce Wayne and Frank Castle could easily have been Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris.

Let's see... The word "crazy" is a bit loosely defined for my taste, but if, lessay, you take "crazy" as "not normal", yes he is very much crazed. Though I must admit it's a magnificent crazyness, one that I wouldn't mind sharing.
On the other hand, what can you say of Alfred's state of mind, aiding and helping his best friend's son on his peculiar career choice for all those years?

My husband and I actually debate this. He thinks Superman is the best Superhero because he was born with his powers. My favorite is Batman because he chooses to be a Superhero, even though he has no actual abilities.

Yes he would be (I like the character btw). His obsession with his parents murder is extreme. He can't really lead a normal life with anyone due to the fact that he can't let go of the past.

C'mon man, it's the ultimate story of redemption, restitution, and vengence. Give the guy a break, no matter how much of a freak he is when he's not doing good for Gotham.

i wouldn't say crazy per say... jaded, dark, and full of anger, possibly... but he uses his money and skills for good as opposed to cause harm on others... obviously the loss of his parents, especially in the way that he did caused some sort of psychological damage, but i definately wouldn't say he's crazy...
