Unless they could establish her death he would probably only be declared Prince Regent so he could exercise her powers but would not be crowned king. The heir to Lord Lucan, who has been missing since the early 70s, has not been able to prove his father is dead and therefore cannot claim his father's title. The same would probably apply to the crown.

If the Monarch was incapacitated or "went missing" - Prince Charles would become Prince Regent. We have a precedent for this when George III was unfit to make decisions in the last years of His Life, His son, the future George IV became Prince Regent.
Also it was thought that Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent might need to be appointed Regent due to Victoria's young age, however she became 18 a few months before becoming Queen. The Present Queen would need to be certified dead before Charles, or whoever is next in line at the time becomes King (or Queen). However, I do not thing that there is the remotest possibility of Her Majesty "going awol"!

No, a Regent would hold the Queen's place until she returned or was pronounced legally dead, at which point Charles would be crowned King.

Princess Margeret used to be the designated Regent--I'm not sure who it is at the moment, but it's probably Charles.

I think Charles would be named Prince Regent & not King until such time as she was confirmed to have died.

It would depend on the will of Parliament. They can in theory designate anyone as Regent
