I am travelling to the Czech Republic in April. We plan to stay three days in Prague and make short trips during the remainding three days. Checking my guidebook, I have seen four places which seem interesting. Which ones should I choose? (only three are possible). Any other interesting cities? Thanks!
The cities are:
-Kutna Hora
-Karlovy Vary
-Cesky Krumlov
-Olomouc

I just moved to Prague four months ago, and I love it here.

A very nice place to stay is the Hotel Rott. Their prices tend to be significantly lower than others in the area. It is just next to Old Town Square, the epicenter of the beautiful historic city center, where you can see the Orloj, (the astronomical clock)

DON'T eat at the "U Orloje" restaurant. Their prices are outrageous, and the food is often below mediocre. Having purchased a $15 chicken sandwich there which I could barely eat, I know what I'm talking about.

Make sure you wear VERY comfortable shoes. You will do a lot of walking in Prague, because tourist sites are usually within walking distance. Have someone teach you how to use the metro. I have never seen a city (not even Paris) that had such a great metro. It's very fast, and goes exactly where you want to go. The metro here is very simple. They have 3 lines: red, green, and yellow. You just have to know which line to take. The metro runs from very early morning till midnight.

Make sure you eat at least once at the outdoor part of the U Prince Hotel, right on Old Town Square. Their food is suprisingly good. Have one very cheap lunch at the Ceske Kuchyne restaurant. It's only about $4 for lunch, and the food is authentic and delicious. It's located very close to the Havelska Trznice (the open air market).

But if you are really limited on time, I would choose Kutna Hora and Olomouc. Sure Olomouc is a bit far, but take a night train there, a sleeper train. That way, you save money on a hotel and get there early in the morning so you have the whole day.

Olomouc is a University town, so it is a lively place. It's also among the poorer parts of the Czech Republic, so prices are quite a bit lower than in Prague.

I'd choose Kutna Hora and Cesky Krumlov and forget the other two.

Olomouc is beautiful but too far away from Prague for a short trip.

Karlovy Vary is pretty but not particularly exciting, except when the film festival is on.

All the best,

I wouldnt go to Olomouc..its on the other side of the country and the only thing interesting from there is a cheese that goes good with beer.

The other three places are all within 1-2 hours of Prague. I can recommned Cesky Krumlov the most enthusiastically..its beautifull and a fun place to spend 2 days..defineatly worth the trip

The other places..I still want to goto Karlovy..and I have read about Kutna..(bone church) its close to prague too maybe one hour east..

other possibilities..Telc is nice (a UNESCO site the town center) as a stopover if you are travelign east although remote

Defineately, Krumlov... its magical about 2 hours south of prague by car maybe less if you go fast or by train. lots of good restaraunts and cheap guest houses.. A big fairy tale s castel to explore and Bears in the castle cages..

I'd skip Olomouc. It's a beautiful city, but too far away from Prague (several hours by bus) and the other towns are more or less similar to Olomouc
