Often the smaller countries that have less elite athletes focus mainly on the sports in which they have the best athletes! I'm from Iceland and the population is only around 330,000! We sent the men handball team, some swimmers and badminton players. Also the smaller the country is the "worse" the athletes are compared to the Olympic standard! So many athletes compete just for the sake of fun and experience. But the bigger countries like the U.S.A, China, Canada and Russia the more fierce the athletes are.
