The indent under a horse's hoof is also a frog. The Greek word batrachos has this meaning and also the animal, according to my dictionary. It may also be infuenced by the word fork, fourche, forchetta (old French & Italian) because it sounds similar. It's a bit of a mystery.

I wonder if it's something to do with frogs sitting in mud, and leaving an indentation behind?

hi i am a trained builder and the frog is the indent of a london brick because some guy decided to call it a frog there isnt a reason y hope i helped ya
