Friction of cloud particles (atoms) causes electric charge when clouds bump against eachother. Lightning is seen first, since light travels faster than sound. The seconds between lightning and thunder are aproximately the distance between the thunderstorm and you in kilometers. If lightning and sound (thunder) happen at the same time, the storm is right above you.
