Air turbulence strips electrons from air molecules, creating charged ions. When the charge differential or voltage between spatially separated regions develops to a high potential, usually several million volts, a tunnel of ionized air conducts a brief but massive electric current between the two regions, creating a bright arc and loud clap of thunder as the air rapidly expands and contracts.

Friction of cloud particles (atoms) causes electric charge when clouds bump against eachother. Lightning is seen first, since light travels faster than sound. The seconds between lightning and thunder are aproximately the distance between the thunderstorm and you in kilometers. If lightning and sound (thunder) happen at the same time, the storm is right above you.

Well, you see, when 2 clouds touch each other, the small particules from them, they also touch, and when they do,they unleash electricity .And the tunder happens in the same time. And if you were wondering why you hear first the thunder, and then you see the lighting, well that's because the speed of light is bigger than the speed of sound.
