The Israeli Government and secret agencies have done much more wrong than simply spying on the US.
We are like the parent of a convicted criminal that refuses to believe or acknowledge that their child would ever do anything wrong.
I do not understand nor would I attempt to justify it.
Some big money or favors must be being exchanged somewhere.
That kind of blind support from the US government can't come cheap.
Corporations payola billions to the Congress and Senate and will still be reigned in if their abuses become too widespread or blatantly obvious.

Not only do they spy on us, but they are second to Russia for being caught spying on us. And in the 60's murdered a shipload of our sailors on a communication vessel.
The reason why we support Israel, is do to an English plan. After World War 2, England lost the middle east. England knows that the whole area would be pissed at England, for the English opression. England decided to give Israel to the Jews. THey probably didn't want the Holyland going to the Muslims and know that the Muslims would be angry if there was a bit of Christian land in that area. The most important thing to the English and now for the Americans, is that Israel is an Early warning system for Muslim hostility. If there is a military build up in the area, The Arab world would attack Israel first and then England and the US second. Israel is kind of a buffer zone for us. If it wasn't for Israel, Iranian backed terrorist would spend more time attacking England and the US, rather than Israel. Plus, what I was told, We sometimes payoff Israel to do our dirty work. SOme suspect that Israel's interference with Iraqs Nuclear program was done on US behest. We can't outwardly stop Iraq's Nuclear program, because they were are Ally and several instances showed we sold Nuclear technology to the Iraqi. Israel was our way of backstabbing Iraq, and making sure Iraq doesn't get the BOmb. They are underhanded, but hey we are too. Birds of a feather.

Israel is the closest ally of the US in the middle east, very similar culture, high tech, democracy.
Israel has been collecting Data on Saudi Arabia by spying on US intelligence sources, Israel does not really need to spy on the US since the US provides Israel with free access to almost any data source, but the US are sensitive about the Saudis. and by the way Israel is probably the best provider of intelligence data in the middle east, to the US, for free.
this is a friendship based on common interests.

Israel is a surrogate state, or a client state if you wish. It guards US interests in the region (read:oil ) Also Israel has an extremely active lobby in Washington supported by the nearly 4 million Jews in the USA. Jews in the USA and the rest of the world have excelled in business, the Arts and the Sciences in a disproportionate number when compared to other ethnicities, hence they have the power to wield, sometimes to the disadvantage of others, like the Palestinians.
As to the question posed by the first respondent, indeed democracy does exist in the Middle East in some form or another ( ie Lebanon) and I can not think of another country aside of Poland perhaps that is not anti-American nowadays!

The Americans feel that the Jews are their ancestors and derive their strength from them. Thus, the US unconditionally supports Israel no matter what the odds.

There are an awful lot of Jewish voters in America who donate big money to political parties who support Israel. I'm not saying that U.S. should not support Israel.

It is interesting to note that the "billions of dollars" of US aid has a major pricetag attached to it.
The Americans can, and have, forced Israel to cancel business deals with other countries.
The aid can only be used for American goods, even when the Israeli-made equivalents are much better.
The Israelis have to pay a premium, or kickback of 2.5% of the aid, to guarantee that they will pay it back.

If we didn't, who would?
Israel is a secular democracy in the midst of Nations which are authoritarian, religious, and evil to a point. Israel is like us, and we like people like us.
