Seemingly there are no software issues having run spybot and other anti-virus at this point.
I run Windows XP and have defragged and actually went as far as to reinstall Windows to no avail after trying restores.
Basically, the computer will run somewhat normally, then will freeze (without error message) for about 10-15 seconds. It will do this about 5 times, then run somewhat more normally for about 5-10 minutes.
The problem only really started this semester at school the computer has ran well for a few years, and as far as i can tell nothing is damaged visibly at least.

After checking amount of ram i do have 512 mb so i think the amount of ram is not the issue.
The computer itself is only a few years old.

Is the problem is not limited to Internet Only freezes ? If you are running Windows XP with less than 512 meg of Ram this could also cause freezes. As new Windows updates come out your machine may need more resources to incorporate any additions to the Operating System. But based on what little information that you have provided it would be impossible to identify any specific problem.

As far as running internet, you should have no problems AT ALL. If you are trying to run games, this is understandable, since there are other factors that fall into it, including processor speed, and video card. But running internet, a computer running 128mb ram can run internet fine, as well as Office(word, excel, publisher...)remember RAM isn't what makes your computer faster, it just expands your ability to run more programs at the same time. With 512mb RAM, RAM wouldn't be your problem. If all you use is internet, perhaps it is IE7, which has been running into a few bugs lately. For some reason factory installations of windows XP run horrible.
I would recommend backing up all your info. Format your entire hard drive, and then reinstall windows Xp from a windows disk and not a restore disk given to you by the manufacturer. Remember, antivirus and whatnot may remove some problems and viruses...but it does not repair the damage caused.

i'm having a similar problem with my laptop. in response to most of your comments so far, my CPU is NOT overflowing. i'm talking 5% - 30% when idle (it's fluctuating). yet, i'm running as if it were at 100%. also, usually if i restart it, it will function better for a little while. btw, it all started when a young friend of mine ignorantly was turning off my laptop by holding down the power button throughout the day. then one time he went to turn it back on and the screen was fuzzy. so, i restored it completely, and now i'm getting this slow stuff.

Some Antispyware and Adware wont allow Spybot to run and clean them.
So install Ad-aware personal edition first, Update it run a complete scan and them run Spybot Search and Destroy.
I think your problem would be solved if you go that way.

Is your machine old? Sometimes there is nothing left to do but physically upgrade...
