can you use Linux to enforce security? how do you use Linux to implement security against threats from the internet and what kind of Linux is best for this purpose? Remember all the computers in the network are runniing windows XP Operating system and one is running Windows 2003 server.

Since you already have Windows 2003 Server running you can enforce Active Directory Security using the Windows 2003 Server.

And for IDS and Firewall you can Linux.

The best free IDS available for LINUX is SNORT.

And as far as firewall goes you can try Smooth Wall and IPCOP. Both would allow you to securly share internet to all the client on the network.

If you are a geek in Linux you can use Squid also.
