A buddy is a person who mends ur broken heart. A person who will listen to all ur whinings without complaining. A person who will laugh with u, cry with u. A person who will scold u when u do something wrong. A person who will look after u when u r ill. Make u feel that u r on the top of the world.

Buddy is what you say to a freind usually a male instead of hello, but not friends that are too close, more like friends you see at work. For example if when you walk in to work and you see one of your work mates you say "How zit going Buddy?". Remember i am from Down Under(Australia) in can be different in the US.

If this info is correct, the word is only about 150 years old. I guessed it would be from Middle English, Chaucer's time.
